While exhorting the Christians at Philippi to follow the example of Christ, Paul encourages them to live as “…children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, in which you shine like stars in the world” (Philippians 2:14-15). The reference to stars shining in the world is compelling and resonates with other passages from scripture. One such passage is found in Matthew 5 where Jesus says, “You are the light of the world…let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:14, 16).
What an incredible opportunity we are given to shine with the light of God, to help others see, and to demonstrate the possibilities of faith. And what a contrast to the modern use of the word “star,” a term used to describe anyone who is famous (or infamous?) because of their talent or beauty. I’m sure that Paul would remind us that the light of such “stars” leads nowhere while the light we share-the light of God-is the true light and by it goodness is shown to conquer evil and hope to transcend despair.
So why do we so often feel like flickering matches compared to the worldly spotlights all around us? Why do we seem always to be outshined, our faint glimmer so overwhelmed? I’m sure that Paul would tell us to keep shining because only the true light will last while the gaudiness of the world will burn itself out in time. Those who are called “stars” come and go, but the light of God is everlasting. The opportunities we have to show what faith can do remain, and by God’s grace our lights offer hope and comfort to those in need.
Prayer: O God, bless us with the strength we need to live in faith even when we feel most discouraged, that our lights may be a source of hope for others. In Jesus name. Amen
